Telephone repair ordered to cut clandestine TV connections
HAVANA, March 1 (Jaime Leygonier / www.cubanet.org) - Repairmen of Cuba's telephone company, a joint Italian-Cuban venture, have been ordered to report any clandestine reception of foreign television signals they see when they're on a service call in someone's home.
The Cuban Communist Party and government agencies have failed in their attempts to stop people from installing home-made satellite dishes or stealing a signal from the few companies, such as hotels ad international companies, authorized to receive foreign TV programming.
Now the Ministry of Communications has told the telephone company, Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba SA (ETECSA), to order its employees to report any clandestine reception. Previously, the repairmen and installers have refused to do so on the grounds this was not part of their job.
